20th C. Franco-Caribbean Literature and the Search for Identity

This course investigates how 20th C. Francophone Literature from the Caribbean has tried to define Caribbean identity. Through a study of literary texts and other artistic expressions from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, Guyana and Louisiana, we will explore the evolution of Caribbean self-definition, through the major concepts of Negritude, Antillanite, Creolite and Louisianitude.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is an introductory course intended for students who have completed FREN 215 or have placed out of FREN 215 through placement test, but not taken more than one course in French beyond 215 and not yet studied abroad in a French-speaking country. Students who have already taken two courses in French beyond FREN 215 or studied abroad should take 300-level courses.

Only COL students will be allowed to take the course CR/U.
