This course, conducted in Italian, will examine the literary career of Italy's first great poet, Dante Alighieri, through readings of LA VITA NUOVA, the RIME PETROSE, and the INFERNO, the first canticle of the DIVINA COMMEDIA. Particular attention will be paid to the development of Dante's encyclopedic poetics by looking at his appropriation of earlier Italian and French poetry, the classical Latin tradition, philosophy, theology, historiography, and science. A course reader will provide critical readings that encompass a wide range of approaches to the interpretation of Dante's work.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two brief essays (2-3 pp.), and two oral presentations leading to a longer essay (5-6 pp.)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Readings, class discussions, and written work in Italian. ITALIAN 234 is intended for students who have completed ITAL 112 or ITAL 221. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before preregistering.
