Contemporary International Art Cinema
FILM 350 SP
This is an advanced seminar exploring the aesthetics and industry of contemporary international art cinema. The class will research the historical construction of art cinema, its institutional and cultural support
structures,
and the status of art cinema today. The primary focus of the class will be cross-cultural comparative analysis within the context of theories of realism, formalism, and authorship. Featured directors will include
Thomas
Vinterberg, Lars von Trier, Guy Maddin, Tsai Ming-liang, Wong Kar-wai, Jia Zhang-ke, Moshen Makhmalbaf, Abbas Kiarostami, Terence Davies, Krzysztof Keislowski, Pedro Almodovar, Agnes Varda, Aki Kaurismaki, Leos Carax,
Luc
and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, and others.

Assessment will be based on class participation, a presentation, one short (5-6 p.) and two long (10-12 p.) papers.
