Readings In Contemporary Theory

In survey courses on contemporary theory, major theorists' work is briefly sampled. This half course will enable students to read in greater depth the work of an important theorist, to see how his or her intellectual engagements change over time, and to develop a better sense of why he or she continues to matter to literary and cultural theory.

MAJOR READINGS

This year, the theorist is Michel Foucault. We read parts of THE BIRTH OF THE CLINIC, MADNESS AND CIVILIZATION, THE ORDER OF THINGS, DISCIPLINE AND PUNISH, THE HISTORY OF SEXUALITY, and some major essays and interviews.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several short papers.
