Poetry by Women
ENGL 283 SP
This course will explore how poetry by women challenges prevailing social arrangements and cultural traditions, and how it envisions change.
MAJOR READINGS
Poems by such poets as Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Bishop, Gwendolyn Brooks, H.D., Adrienne Rich, Rita Dove, Joy Harjo, Lucille Clifton, Mary Oliver, Maggie Nelson. Various critical and historical essays. Selected
prose by some of the poets.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Take home final exam, analytical journal, group presentation to class.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course is NOT for students who have NO EXPERIENCE with reading poetry.
See instructor for prerequisite override if you did NOT take English 201 but DO have equivalent preparation, for instance some other
college-level course in the critical
reading of poetry.
OR you can also use a WMST Gateway course for your pre-requisite.
