Postcolonial Literature
ENGL 275 FA
This course will introduce literary texts from a variety of formerly colonized nations in what is sometimes called the Third World, such as India, Nigeria, Martinique, Trinidad, and Brazil. Among the issues we will
discuss:
are we justified in discussing a literary genre called Third World or Postcolonial? What are its attributes if we are so justified? What happens to a text from the Third World when it is read within the First World?
MAJOR READINGS
Selected readings may include authors such as Naipaul, Kureishi, Zadie Smith, and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two 5-page essays, midterm and final.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Regular attendance and participation in class discussions.
