Postcolonial Theory
ENGL 272 SP
Postcolonial theory has taught us a great deal about power and its creation, its maintenance and its resistance. This class will examine some of the major issues within the field of power, the construction of the
colonial
subject, the role of literary studies, the discourse of the nation, the female subject, and the problematic potential of postmodernism.

Ania Loomba, Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, Homi Bhabha and others
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two short essays and a 20 page research paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Background in literary theory and postcolonial literature desirable but not required. This course counts towards the English Department's theory requirement. Regular attendance and class particpation.
