Modern Drama I: Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov and After
ENGL 234 SP
"Modern Drama" is nearly 150 years old and just as vital as ever. This course explores the foundations of the movement in Ibsen, Strindberg, and Chekhov, relating each of them to recent playwrights. Regular scene work
by class members supplements the lecture-discussion format.
MAJOR READINGS
Several plays each by Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, Anton Chekhov. Plays by Arthur Miller, August Wilson, Eugene O'Neill, Edward Albee, Paula Vogel, Adrienne Kennedy, Sam Shepard, Harold Pinter, Caryll Churchill,
Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Noel
Coward, Joe Orton.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
2-4 short analytical papers; classroom presentations; mid-term; final. Quizzes if the need arises.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This is an intermediate level literature course that combines element of a survey with more in-depth analysis. Students with a practical interest in theater are welcome, as are those primarily interested in literature.
