Medieval Romances

This course offers a survey of one of the most popular and challenging literary genres of the High and late Middle Ages: the romance. In addition to a close study of the texts themselves, the class will consider questions of genre and categorization, the tradition of chivalry and the stereotypes of courtly love, as well as issues of oral performance in medieval court culture. We will read romances written throughout Europe and England in the Middle Ages. By the end of the class, you will begin to understand the complexities of the medieval romance genre, the diversity of its characteristics, and its place in medieval literary and social culture.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings will include Chrétien de Troyes' Arthurian tales, LANCELOT: KNIGHT OF THE CART and YVAIN: KNIGHT OF THE LION, selections from Malory's MORTE D'ARTHUR, tales of Germanic folk heroes, such as HAVELOK THE DANE, as well as SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, SIR ORFEO, AMIS and AMILOUN and Chaucer's TROILUS AND CRISEYDE.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course meets the English Department's Pre-1800 requirement.
