Topics in this survey of American literature since the Civil War will include major prose writers and literary movements. We will make an effort to situate texts in their historical contexts.

MAJOR READINGS

The following authors will be represented: Davis, Twain, James, Crane, Chesnutt, Gilman, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Hurston, O'Neill, West, and Wright.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm quiz and essay, end of term quiz and essay.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is a reading--and thinking--intensive course, and students will be expected to keep up with a demanding syllabus.
