Academic Year 2005/2006
Advanced Fiction Workshop
ENGL 168 SP
For people who have already had an introduction to the techniques of fiction, or another course in fiction writing, and want to continue writing short fiction and having their work critiqued by other students and by the
instructor. Reading will be tailored to the interests of the class. Students will be expected to make copies of their own work and distribute it to the class at least a week in advance of its being discussed.
MAJOR READINGS
The class will read and discuss three stories by each student, as well as a steady diet of stories by published authors.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Students will write three to four short stories, for a total of 10,000-12,000 pages, as well as a non-cosmetic revision of one of the stories; there will be regular journal entries and a final portfolio of all written
work.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students must apply to this course with a 5-page fiction sample including name, email address, year in school, and a one-sentence description of previous writing experience. Please bring (not email or fax) samples to
