Introduction to Fiction Writing
ENGL 144 FA
In this course, we will consider the fundamental elements of fiction, including language, voice, characterization, point of view, chronology, and the relationship between structure, style, and content. Writing exercises
designed to sharpen prose and challenge the imagination will be assigned in conjunction with readings by selected authors, providing students with an introduction to the range of possibilities available to the fiction
writer.
Assigned readings will include work by Anton Chekhov, Donald Barthelme, Flannery O¿Connor, David Foster Wallace, Junot Diaz, Lorrie Moore, Alice Munro, and Lydia Davis.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
A writing sample (3-5 pages of fiction, non-fiction, or academic prose).
Submit your application by 4 pm on Tuesday, September 6, 2005: print your essay and cover sheet (which includes the course number and
title, your name, class year, and email
address) and deliver by mail or in person to Secretary, English Department, Downey House, Room 204, 294 High Street, Middletown, CT 06459-0100. NO EMAIL OR FAX APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED.

the class, you will be notified by
email by Sunday September 11, 2005.
--The first meeting of this class will be Thursday, September 15.
