Hamlet
ENGL 104 SP

A contextual study of Shakespeare's most enigmatic play. We will consider the play in light of its sources, its genre (revenge tragedy), its ethical background (the debate over the morality of revenge), its political background (the question of resistance to divine right), its religious background (the Catholic belief in purgatory and the Calvinist doctrine of special providence), and its critical reception.
