Economic Analysis and the Law
ECON 225 FA

The course uses economic analysis as a way of understanding the structure and evolution of the legal system. Selected rules and institutional forms drawn from the common law of property, contract, tort and crime are studied as evolved responses to particular issues that were points of dispute in litigation. Scholarly sources in law and economic theory describing the evolution of common law norms will be referenced throughout the course.

MAJOR READINGS

A required textbook in the field of law and economics will ge augmented with many articles made available through electronic reserves (ERes). Most readings are drawn from economic sources; some will specifically address case law.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three graded essays, each 6-8 pages. No final examination.
