Crosslistings: PHIL 281 |
This colloquium will take up the following questions: What distinguishes the public from the private spheres of social life? Is the distinction between these two spheres confined to certain historical periods or cultures, or is it universal? Has the way the distinction has been drawn significantly changed during the course of history? What ought to be the proper relationship between these two spheres in a modern, industrialized, democratic society? Answers to these and related questions will involve analyzing concepts related to "public" and "private", such as "political", "individual", "civil society", "self", "privacy", "property" and "rights."
