Psychoanalysis and Feminism
COL 211 FA

In this course, we will investigate the ongoing evolution of a complicated and vexed relationship between psychoanalysis and feminism. We will discuss key texts by Freud and Lacan on the subject of feminine sexuality, consider feminist reception of these texts, and reflect on how it has changed over time. While some theorists have rejected psychoanalytic discourse outright, others have attempted to appropriate and even to transform psychoanalysis in order to articulate alternative understandings of gender and sexual difference. As feminist engagement with psychoanalysis has shifted from a concern over women's difference from men to differences between women and utimately to differences within a woman herself, new questions about gendered subjectivity have emerged; these are questions that will be critically explored by students in this course.
