Women and the Polis in Ancient Greece

In this course we will study women in ancient Greece in relation to the history and institutions of the polis (city-state) under ten rubrics: "Women and the Origins of the Polis," "Ancient Greek Heroines," "Hetairai (`Mistresses')," "Funerary Ritual," "Maenads and Madness," "Worshipping Demeter," "Worshipping Athena," "Amazons," "Marriage and Weddings" and "Female Bodies." In the first half of the course we will survey each of these topics briefly; in the second half of the course students will present to the class the results of their research on one of the topics. Students will work on their topics in pairs and may present their results as a web site or as a research paper.

MAJOR READINGS

A variety of primary sources (selections from ancient Greek writers such as: Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus, Euripides, Sophocles, Aristophanes, Aristotle, Lysias, Xenophon, Menander, and Plutarch) available on line.

Either a variety of paperbacks or one principal secondary source reading (such as Cartledge, ed., THE CAMBRIDGE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF ANCIENCE GREECE.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One short-answer and essay midterm; one short-answer and essay final.
