The Religions of Greece and Rome
CCIV 218 SP
This course provides an introduction to the religious traditions and practices of Greece and Rome from the Greek Dark Ages to the High Roman Empire. Major topics will include: cult and community, sacrifice, prophecy and
divination, belief, sacred space and sacred time, the introduction of foreign gods, religion and medicine, the worship of mortals, war and religion, domestic cult, spectacle and the divine, mystery cults, magic and
superstition.
The course will for the most part not consider Judaism and early Christianity.
