Daughters of Demeter: Women in Ancient Greece
CCIV 210 FA

Crosslistings:
WMST 206

In this course we study ancient Greek goddesses and women in myth, literature and the Western tradition. Since no previous knowledge of ancient Greek culture is required for this course, the first week is devoted to an overview of ancient Greece. We begin the course proper with the creation of the world and then go on to consider the domains of ARTEMIS the virgin goddess of the hunt, APHRODITE, the goddess of love and passion, DEMETER, the goddess of agriculture, HESTIA, goddess of the hearth and home, and ATHENA, goddess of the city of Athens. In each section of the course, we study the goddess' domain, the embodiment of her worship in ritual and in women's social life, and the survival of her image in the Western tradition. There is an online multiple-choice quiz after each section and an opportunity to substitute one optional paper for one of the quizzes.
