Three Great Myths: Prometheus, Persephone and Dionysus

A detailed analysis of three important myths from classical antiquity, the stories of Prometheus, Persephone and Dionysus. We will examine both literary and visual representations from antiquity. We will also consider
how
these myths lived on in the Western tradition.
MAJOR READINGS
Hesiod, THEOGONY
Aeschylus, PROMETHEUS BOUND, HOMERIC HYMN TO DEMETER
Euripides, BACCHAE
As well as selections from numerous other ancient sources in translation, and some modern interpretive essays.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several short (2 pp.) papers and a longer paper or project at the end of the term.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Consistent participation in class discussion is essential.
