Plant-Animal Interactions
BIOL 316 SP
This course will explore the ecology and evolution of interactions between plants and animals, including mutualism (e.g. pollination, frugivory) and antagonism (e.g. herbivory, granivory), that are central to the
functioning
of ecosystems and the generation of biodiversity. The format will be seminar-style, involving reading, discussion, and student presentations of key papers on chosen topics.
MAJOR READINGS
The course will use the following book as a text: Herrera, C.M. and Pellmyr, O., editors. 2002. PLANT-ANIMAL INTERACTIONS: AN EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH. Blackwell. Other readings will be articles chosen by students from the
primary literature.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
There will be one examination on lecture material presented at the beginning of the course. The remainder of the course will be dedicated to seminar topics presented by students. Each student will be assigned at least
one oral presentation on a topic of
interest. A bibliography of important information sources for the presentation topic is required. On weeks when he or she is not presenting, each student is responsible for writing a brief report (summary and questions)
of the reading material.
