Laboratory in Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology

In recent years, an explosion of new immunological, biochemical and microscopic techniques have revolutionized the way neuroscientists study brain structure and function. The goal of this laboratory course is to introduce students to cutting edge laboratory techniques currently used to study the nervous system. Students will learn sterile tissue culture; how to section brain tissue and stain with antibodies using immunochemistry; how to analyze proteins by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoreseis and Western blotting; and how to detect neurochemical events associated with cell death. Class time will also be devoted to analysis of experimental design and hypothesis testing.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Laboratory notebook, lab reports, 2 short scientific essays, a lab method practical exam, short response essays on journal articles, poster presentation of research projects, final term paper on research project.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

The time in the laboratory and outside readings are estimated to take approximately 8-10 hours/week. Because of the project-oriented nature of the course, students will be expected to return to the lab at various times during the week to complete experiments.
