Laboratory in Neurophysiology

This course introduces a wide range of techniques for recording the electrical signals from nerve and muscle cells. We will make use of a range of preparations and both invertebrate and vertebrate species (except birds and mammals). Experiments deal with sensory, motor and coordinating elements and include studies of single cells and simple nervous systems using extracellular, intracellular and patch clamp recording techniques.
Grading is based on performance in the laboratory and lab writeups. The course is not offered Cr/U.

MAJOR READINGS

Reserve readings as appropriate for each laboratory exercise.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Lab reports.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Four to five hours of laboratory per week are required. One additional hour of lecture/discussion at a time to be arranged is also required. Interview with instructor. Course is not open to first-year students.
