New Media in Context
ARST 481 SP

New media is transient and ephemeral. It allows forms to shift between contexts and modes of address. It complicates our notions of authorship and representation. It alienates and empowers communities. As new generations of artists simultaneously encounter the freedoms and constraints of new digital media, the evolution of digital art and the circumstances that govern its creation and reception continues.

This studio seminar will address the impact of new media in our society through readings, discussions and artistic experimentation with digital forms and formats. Students will investigate the conceptual issues specific to new media with the digital tools available in print, video, or web-based formats. Projects will be examined for their strength in visual communication, formal and conceptual strategy, and effect. Previous experience with digital imaging, video, animation, or web design is helpful but not necessary for the industrious student.
