Painting I
ARST 439 SP
An introductory-level course in painting (oils) with emphasis on working from observation. Stress on the fundamentals of formal structure: color, composition, scale, format and paint manipulation. Individual and group
critiques. Museum trips and discussion of campus exhibitions when possible.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings will be posted.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm and final critique of paintings. Ten hours of independent studio work is required each week.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Materials fee: $145.00. Selection by interview with instructor, at which time a portfolio containing no more than 10 works on paper may be presented. Date and times of interviews will be posted outside art studios and
available by contacting the
department office. Interviews will take place shortly after distribution of course catalog and before registration. Interviews will be held in Art Studio South 103. A list of those students accepted in the course will be
posted the following day. The Perm
ission of Instructor forms will be ready at that time. Students must hand the POI form into the Registrar's Office before their Registration session, and then must select the course while registering to secure the
space.
