This course covers European architecture and urbanism in the "long" seventeenth-century. Lectures will explore the evolution of Baroque architecture in Italy, beginning with Michelangelo's "mannerism," to include the various interpretations and reactions to those developments in Germany, France, and England. Individual works will be discussed as attempts to integrate considerations of purpose, patronage, site requirements, planning, construction, and style.
