This course investigates the diverse responses of 19th-century and 20th-century painters, photographers and film-makers to the myth and reality of the North American landscape. For what purposes did visual artists pictorialize the landscape? How did their interpretations compare to those formulated by American writers? How and why did attitudes to and imaging of the landscape change over the course of the 19th century?
