Rereading Gendered Agency: Black Women's Experience of Slavery
ANTH 220 SP
Slavery systematically influenced both the production and reproduction of race, class and gendered identities. Black women's individual and collective response to this institution and its attempts at dehumanization and
destruction highlights the impact of gender, race/color and class on the making of different yet complex patterns of resistance. This course uses a variety of research techniques and analytical approaches to investigate
gendered agency. The aim is to "reread" black women's experiences of enslavement and their conscious struggle to carve out identities and a sense of personhood to allow for exploration of gender specific responses to
the
cultural dynamics of power.
