THEA 282
WMST 247

Drama from the Yuan Dynasty (13th century) to the present will be read and discussed, with special emphasis on the interactions between Chinese and European/American theater styles. These include Bertold Brecht's fascination with Yuan drama and Eugene O'Neill's influence on 20th century Chinese dramaturgy. Interactions between pre-modern, modern and contemporary drama will also be pursued. We will focus intensely on how recent drama draws strength from a venerable tradition. We will also explore some of the gender implications of female impersonators, all-female drama troops, and related matters. Students who take this course will come away with an insight into dramatic conventions quite different from those on the western stage.
