From Nativism to Post/Colonialism: Japanese Literature, 1868-1945

This course will explore Japanese literary works in the first eight decades of Japan's modern period. The focus of this course will gradually shift from Nativist works to colonialist and post-colonialist works, as Japan's modernization progresses. Knowledge of Japanese desirable, but not required.

MAJOR READINGS

Modern fiction by Higuche Ichiyo, Mori Ogai, Natsume Soseki, Tanizaki Junichiro, Tamura Toshiko, Miyamoto Yuriko, Kawabata Yasunari, and others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

A short paper for each work examined; two papers; and final exam.
