Academic Year 2005/2006

Education and Identity Formation
AFAM 330 FA

Why are we interested in identity in our lives and in the social sciences? Identity matters, but in different ways and at different times. This class explores identity--personal, social, cultural and academic--through contemporary debates within sociology and will draw on issues related to gender, ethnicity, race, sexuality and educational experiences. We will address the ways identity has real consequences, its fixed and fluid nature, and examine how specific groups experience the world.
