The first known African American short story was published in France in 1837 by Victor Sejour, a Louisiana-born free black writer. The English translation, known as "The Mulatto" is thematically united with subsequent creative writings from the Americas that offer social critiques on miscegenation. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's 1859 short story, "The Two Offers", is more aligned with the early feminist movements than with race, yet, it still stands as the first short story published by an African American woman. This course begins with these two writers, and moves through the literary histories of the anthologized short story in the United States, the Caribbean and Africa.
