Academic Year 2004/2005

Senior Seminar
WMST 405 FA

This course is a required seminar for senior Women's Studies majors. The central goal is to engage in an intensive examination of topics in the interdisciplinary field of Women's Studies. Seminar participants will determine the topics to be examined. We will begin with readings chosen by the instructor that address the relation between theory and practice in feminist scholarship. We then turn to student-generated readings and presentations relating to projects pursued by seminar participants. Each participant will make a presentation about his/her topic and lead the class discussion of readings they have assigned. Most students will focus their presentation, readings, and discussion on their senior thesis or senior essay project. Others may choose--as individuals or small groups--to develop practically-based or activist-oriented projects. In taking this option students must engage intellectual issues grounded in Women's Studies.

MAJOR READINGS

After several weeks of reading articles on theory and practice in Women's Studies, readings will be generated by seminar participants in consultation with the instructor.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One short paper, a project proposal or topic statement, a 10 page annotated bibliography, oral presentations, and several commentaries on the presentations and topic statement of other seminar participants.
