Reading Borges
SPAN 267 SP

Crosslistings:
LAST 267

This course will examine the work of one of the most original and influential figures of 20th Century Hispanic Literature: the Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges. By analyzing his prose, fiction, essays and poems, we will discuss Borges's contribution to rethinking a broad array of literary, philosophical and historical questions: the idea of the author, the literary work and the reader; the notions of tradition, nation and nationalism; the concepts of language, self and identity; and the problem of knowledge classification. Special attention will be given to the way Borges's work has confronted and questioned international and local political and social events. At the same time, in order to understand how contemporary literature and philosophy have been influenced and tranformed by Borges's unique literary production, we will also explore critical readings of his works by leading European, U.S. and Latin American writers and thinkers.
