Venedikt Erofeev 's "poem in prose," written in 1970, circulated in samizdat in tens of thousand copies before it was published in the USSR in 1988. The drunken saga of a Russian intellectual gives a vision of the whole of contemporary Russia, parodying Russian classical texts and the rituals and habits of late Soviet life. We will do a close reading of the book in Russian in installments of 10-15 pages a week. Discussions will be in English. The English translation of the text will also be used. Native Russian speakers will be assigned additional critical texts on the parodic structure of Erofeev's prose and descriptions of Soviet life.
