The aim of this course is to trace the changes in the Realists' idea of drama brought about by A.P. Chekhov. We will compare Chekhov's plays with those of his immediate predecessors, Ibsen and Strindberg, and will try to discover the impact of the 19th-century European novel on the theatrical tradition represented by Ibsen, Strindberg, and Chekhov. The course will cover Chekhov's major plays with a special emphasis on their structure, characters, symbols, and Chekhov's use of theatrical time and space.
