This course is a reading of Dostoevsky's major works in the context of Russian intellectual history and Russian and West European literature of the mid-19th century.
MAJOR READINGS
Frank, DOESTOEVSKY, Volumes I and II
Doestoevsky, POOR PEOPLE; NOTES FROM THE DEAD HOUSE; NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND; CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, DEMONS.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Four to five one-page papers which prepare discussion questions; one longer paper; a mid-term and final exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Critical articles available on reserve will be required reading.
