Pushkin
RUSS 250 FA

Crosslistings:
REES 284

Reading Pushkin in Russian is a rich reward for the hard work of studying the Russian language. This seminar is for students who are at or above the third year of language study. The main focus will be on four works: EVGENY ONEGIN, KAPITANSKAIA DOCHKA, MEDNYI VSADNIK and MOTSART I SALIERI. Each is an instance of brilliant stylistic innovation; each subsequently attained mythic stature in Russian culture. We will study each work as an innovative reworking of genre and myth that still serves to define Russian culture. All Pushkin readings will be in Russian; class discussions will be in Russian and in English; some biographical and historical background reading will be in English.
