Understanding Psychopathology
PSYC 251 FA
This course provides a survey of the major contemporary schools of psychopathology (biological, psychoanalytic, interpersonal, social, behavioral-cognitive). It familiarizes students with the current classification
system
(DSM IV) for psychiatric disorders. It will include a survey of some major psychiatric disorders and their causes and consequences. It will introduce students to basic approaches to assessment and treatment of
individuals
with psychopathology.

- This course provides a survey of historical and contemporary understandings of psychopathology (including biological, psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic-existential and sociocultural models). As students learn
about models of classification of
different psychiatric disorders they will also be encouraged to think critically about the concept of psychopathology, the prevalence of certain disorders and historical/cultural motivations for particular methods of
diagnosing and treating psychopatholog

- There will be an assigned text, 2-3 memoirs and supplemental readings. (Assignments may be subject to further revision).
- Examinations and Assignments
- Three exams and term paper.
