Philosophical Classics I: Ancient Western Philosophy
PHIL 201 SP
This course is designed to acquaint the students with the major figures and movements of ancient Greek philosophy, where many of the strands of the traditions of Western philosophy and science have their beginnings. We
will examine a number of philosophical problems in the historical and cultural context in which they arose in ancient Greece. Among the issues we will consider are justice, knowledge, happiness and death. Reading is
mainly
in the primary sources.
MAJOR READINGS
Selected Presocratics;
Plato, EUTHYPHRO, APOLOGY, CRITO, PHAEDO, MENO, REPUBLIC;
Aristotle, CATEGORIES, sections of the POSTERIOR ANALYTICS, PHYSICS, METAPHYSICS; ETHICS.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One or two short (5 page) and one longer (8-10 page) final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
IMPORTANT NOTE: Those who register for Section 01 will have additional assignments at a higher degree of difficulty. Texts should be read in advance of the class meeting in which they are discussed.
