South Indian Music--Solkattu
MUSC 212 FA
This course may be repeated for credit.
A course in the rhythmic repertoire of South India using a system of vocables corresponding to drum strokes. An accelerated approach to the repertoire; students will receive an introduction to the fundamentals of tala
and
rhythmic composition. Advanced students will study a variety of compositions in a number of talas.
MAJOR READINGS
Compositions and/or exercises are presented orally in notation. Through practice, students master the assignments from one lesson to another.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Regular practices of class work. Composition assignments based on classes. In class midterm and final. Midterm exam will cover written theory and performance. Final exam will emphasize performance.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Strict attendance is compulsory. When offered, Section 2 will be open to students who have studied at least one semester of Solkattu.
