Harmony and Tonal Counterpoint I
MUSC 201 SP

This course is designed to give a thorough grounding in the basic compositional techniques of tonal harmony, part-writing (counterpoint), and formal structures of the "common practice" era in Western art music. LECTURES will introduce concepts on a theoretical level and provide guidance of ways in which they can be meaningfully applied to actual music. EAR-TRAINING SECTIONS, led by a TA, will focus on the development of aural and keyboard skills. Students are required to attend one hour-long ear-training session per week on Friday between 11:00am and 1:00pm.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly homework exercises, periodic tests, an analytic paper, and a final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Ability to read music is required. Students will be expected to know the major and minor scales and the signatures (circle of fifths) and all major and minor intervals and triads.
