Topology
MATH 242 SP
This course is an introduction to topology, the study of space in a general sense. In fall 2004, we will approach topology through knot theory, the study of embeddings of a circle in a 3-dimensional space.
MAJOR READINGS
The textbook - SET THEORY AND METRIC SPACES by I. Kaplansky. Allyn & Bacon-most recent edition.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One hour exam, one three-hour final examination, about 5 substantial homework assignments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Criteria for admission to course: Successful completion of MATH222 or the equivalent is desirable, though not mandatory if other credentials are in order.
