An Introduction to Mathematical Statistics
MATH 232 SP
After an introduction to the reasons for studying statistics and a review of probability, the course treats the fundamentals of statistics, both theoretical and applied. After a brief view of exploratory data analysis,
we
turn to the important question of developing suitable statistical models. For the simple models, we treat in detail bootstrapping, estimators and efficiency, the principle of maximum likelihood, least squares estimates,
confidence
intervals, and hypothesis testing. The course ends with investigation of the idea of sufficiency and, if time permits, exponential families.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One chapter (approximately 14 pages) per week will be assigned, with four exercises per week to be turned in. Additional, more challenging problems will also be available for the ambitious. Full understanding of each
chapter is expected, and will be
judged weekly as the course progresses. Students will be informed weekly of their progress and current grade estimate, and required to resubmit incorrect work.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This is the second course in a two-course sequence at the intermediate level, the first course being Math 231, Probability. Although the first course is not formally required for registration, its material is assumed to
be known. Both courses use the
material listed in Major Readings, available electronically from the instructor at no cost.
A basic understanding of calculus, limit procedures, and of probability is expected. Regular class attendance is
essential. The course format will be mixed
lecture, discussion, and problem solving in class.
