Academic Year 2004/2005
Linear Algebra
MATH 223 SP
An alternative to MATH221, this course will cover vector spaces, inner-product spaces, dimension theory, linear transformations and matrices, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, Hermitian and unitary
transformations,
and elementary spectral theory. It will present applications to analytic geometry, quadratic forms, and differential equations as time permits. The approach here is more abstract than that in MATH221, though many
topics
appear in both.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly homework assignments, midterm and final exams.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
MATH223, Linear Algebra, is a deeper, more conceptual and somewhat more extensive study of linear algebra, offered as an alternative to MATH221, Vectors and Matrices. Students may not get credit for more than one of
MATH221 and MATH223. MATH121 and
MATH122 is strongly recommended as background, but not required.
