The Roman Historians
LAT 253 FA
The course will be devoted to studying the principles and methods of Latin historiography. Students will read selections in Latin from the major Roman historians, especially Sallust, Livy, and Tacitus, and both ancient
and modern discussions of the writing of history. Special attention will be paid to the role of narrative and description in history.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Preparation of assignments in Latin for each class and regular secondary readings, three short exams, a seminar report, and a final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Student should normally have taken at least one Latin course at the 200 level. In doubtful cases consult the instructor.
