Plays and Spectacles: 20-Century Italian Theater

Plays, playwrights, and playmaking in Italy during the 20th century are the subject of this course. We will consider the work of such playwrights as Luigi Pirandello, Edoardo de Filippo, Natalia Ginzburg, Dacia Maraini, Dario Fo, Franca Rame, and productions deriving from the Fo-Rame collaboration. As well, we will investigate the Futurist "serate" and Fascist spectacles and parades of the 1930s. When scripted plays are the object of inquiry, close readings will inform their position in literary history; an examination of the plays' reception, both at premier and subsequently, will provide a cultural and historical framework in which they may be considered in Italian.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will be required to write one-page response papers to each of the plays or spectacles studied. Additionally, instead of orthodox presentations, students will produce scenes from each scripted play we read. One short essay at midterm, one longer essay at end-semester, and a Final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

ITAL247 is intended for students who have completed ITAL112 or ITAL221. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before preregistering.
