Issues in Contemporary Historiography
HIST 362 FA
This course introduces history majors to a range of problems, debates, and critical practices in the discipline of History. Part I explores the intersection of history and anthropology and the problem of imaginative
reconstruction
in history writing. Part II deals with objectivity and evidence in several fiercely contested areas of study. Part III introduces you to some of the most important theories of history and to the perennial problem of
the
role of structural forces and personal agency. In Part IV we examine two very different approaches to similar subject matter--the macro- and micro-historical. Finally, Part V introduces you to several new critical
approaches--feminism
and debates over postmodernism and the application of evolutionary theory to history.
MAJOR READINGS
The readings for this course will include a broad range of critical essays and selected primary source documents.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Students will be responsible for several short essays and a final project that involves writing an essay on one of the areas of focus examined during the semester.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course is a required course for all history majors.
