The New Deal represents an important link between pre-WWI progressive reform politics and the national social welfare policies of the post-WWII era. This seminar will examine the creation of the New Deal Democratic coalition, federal social and economic policies in the 1930s, the effects of state intervention, and resistance to New Deal programs and social agendas. Students will also be asked to consider the relationship between politics and cultural production.
