Empire: India and Britain, 1600-1947
HIST 285 FA

India and Indians were central to the rise and demise of Britain's global empire. Britain and Britons were central to the emergence and final shape of the Indian nation-state. This course will introduce students to history of empire in India and Britain. Each week will consist of a contextual lecture by the instructor and a student-led examination and discussion of an arena, event, image, or personality form multiple perspectives, from both Britain and India. Discussion themes include: the Mughal emperor Jahangir; merchants; Catholics; the Battle of Buxar; Warren Hastings; thuggee; the 1857 uprising; Queen Victoria; railroads; the decennial census; World War I; Gandhi¿s Salt March; the peasant; Partition.
